ABOUT US

Our vision

is to see all women discover and acknowledge their potential

Our mission

centers on creating a safe environment where women can support other women to grow by sharing knowledge, learned experience and skills of all shapes and forms.

Our primary aim is to promote women's health and wellbeing and reduce social isolation. We are working towards providing a range of workshops and activities, including woodworking, home maintenance, creative projects, guest speakers, and social gatherings.

Mentorship

When anyone seeks to learn something new, the starting point is always the teacher. While many of our male counterparts are brilliant teachers, there is unspoken comfort in having a female teacher that truly understands the hesitation, self doubt, and even fear in learning a skill that is traditionally male dominated. Whether this skill be learning how to use a drill, change a tire, chair a meeting, public speaking, or assertiveness in the workplace.

When women discover their true capabilities it can help change the mindset that sees many of us reflexively call a handyman or dismiss applying for a promotion. From our workshops through to how we operate as a committee we aim to provide as many opportunities as possible to shift this mindset.

Michelle Slater, founder of Bayswater Women's Hub

The look on a woman's face when she achieves something she originally thought impossible is magic

A sentiment shared by Patt Gregory from 'woodwork for women' who supported our very own Pica, Helen, Brigitte and Eloise to become wood working facilitators for the first time. One of our facilitators asked Patt they might gain constructive feedback, to which Patt replied

Ask the students what they think the facilitators did well. But remember, the most valuable feedback is in their faces!

Therein lies the power of teaching. Any doubt that previously existed with respect to having the requisite qualifications, experience etc. is quickly overshadowed by the undeniable truth that your input had a direct impact on another person.

Who We Are

We are a not-for-profit charity  committed to promoting and normalising women's physical and mental health. We began from humble beginnings out of a Facebook community by our Founder Emma Rudd. By April 2024 we became an official not-for-profit organisation led by our inaugural chair Kahli Rogers, and opened up for membership in August 2024 with the support of a community grant by the City of Subiaco.

In May 2024, we became endorsed as a charity by the Australian Charities Commission, and partnered with Act, Belong, Commit in November 2024. In December we ran our first woodworking workshop (as featured in the photos on this page).

The Subiaco Women's Shed is 100% volunteer run by a committee of 6-8, with subcommittees and working groups as needed. Our first AGM will be held within the first few months of 2025. Details will be available on our website and social media once finalised.
